It is an exploration into family secrets, a wonderful narrative of mothers and daughters, and a brilliant portrait of twentieth-century Parisian creative and imaginative life. It deserves all the praise it has received. "A powerful, highly readable, and deeply moving account of a Jewish family almost completely wiped out in the Holocaust. Though deemed a novel, almost everything in the book is true, except for the changing of some peoples’ names.
