This article is more than 4 years old.

What if you could see the future? Would that change what you’d do today? Every year, I share workplace predictions based on my work with clients and my uncanny ability to see what others miss. Here are my twenty workplace predictions for the coming year.

Now that you know what to expect, what will you do differently on day one?

1.    Employers will win over talent by offering what no one else is offering—great leadership!

2.    Employers will continue to waste millions of dollars a year, trying to hire people who don’t want to be hired.

3.    Hiring managers will finally realize there is a reason they are called “hiring” managers and will take ownership of the recruitment and hiring process.

4.    Employees, who feel little connection to their boss, will finally realize that they’re in the driver’s seat and will actively seek other opportunities.

5.    Micromanagers will be assigned to other micromanagers and will quit within two months of this move. Employees throughout the organization will rejoice!

6.    Smart companies will stop trying to save money by hiring junior HR managers and instead will hire seasoned HR partners, who will bring world-class business practices to their organization.

7.    Leaders will act surprised when employees who didn’t receive a pay raise in 2019 leave the organization for a better paying job.

8.    Boards will start to question the outrageous pay packages disgraced CEOS are awarded on their way out the door and will take action to correct this injustice.

9.    Job seekers will finally realize that networking with people you don’t know via social media is a complete waste of time and will return to face-to-face networking.

10. Companies that have resisted permitting employees to work from home will finally cave.

11. Succession plans will no longer go out five years and instead will be limited to 24 months.

12. Company departure lounges will be standing room only, as disengaged employees flood the waiting area, waiting to take the next flight out of their company.

13. Organizations will realize that leadership is a journey, not a destination and will invest in their leaders accordingly.

14. Companies will stop wasting billions of dollars on employee engagement programs that don’t work and instead will focus on what matters—the ability of leaders to connect with the hearts and minds of the people they serve.

15. Executives, who’ve been phoning it in, will realize there is more to work than a paycheck. They’ll seek outside opportunities that will excite them again about coming to work every day.

16. Companies will tout their commitment to diversity, while their boards and senior leadership teams remain filled with white males.

17. Companies that seed their organization with the right people, and nurture these people along the way, will see their efforts yield a bounty of evergreen talent.

18. Boomerang employees, those who’ve departed the company and are looking to return, will be welcomed with open arms, as the labor market remains tight.

19. Women will continue to wait until they are 100 percent sure they’ve got what it takes before applying for a promotion, while less qualified male counterparts boldly step forward and snag the promotions.

20. Poaching talent will be as acceptable as stealing clients.
