There are new changes coming to the streetscape in downtown Brevard.
This spring, Main Street will be saying goodbye to one of its long-time local businesses and make way for another well-known business making a move up the hill, according to a press release.
After being a popular one-stop location for kitchen gear, wine and gourmet snacks since 1994, Proper Pot proprietors Beth and Larry Canady will retire at the end of February 2019. The doors will not be closed for long, however.
The local independent bookstore Highland Books is moving into the spot from College Plaza, the release said.
"It has been an honor and privilege to serve the citizens of Brevard and beyond for all these years," said Beth Canady. "We will miss the friends we've made over all these years."
Larry Canady, a former city councilman, twice president of The Heart of Brevard, and head of the Heart of Brevard's festival and events for eight years, said he has seen many positive changes since opening The Proper Pot.
"There's been a lot of hard work by downtown merchants and countless volunteers that has made downtown Brevard what it is today," he said.
"We would like to take this opportunity to say, 'Thank you' to everyone who has helped make The Proper Pot successful and how much we appreciate our long time customers," Beth continued. "It has truly been a blessing to serve all of you."
Highland Books, owned and operated by Amanda Mosser, will move into the space on West Main Street.
"We welcome the added floor space for expanding our inventory," Mosser said. "We have wanted to move to Main Street for some time, and this location just made sense. We know that after 43 years in the same location this move will be a big change for our customers, but we feel that the move will ensure that the bookstore will be a thriving business in Brevard for many years to come. We came upon an amazing opportunity and are thrilled to take it. Though we will be in a very different space, all of the services that our customers have come to love and expect will be continued at our new location downtown."
Highland Books is looking forward to working in the new space in hopes of facilitating more events and increasing inventory, including some sidelines currently available at Proper Pot, such as bulk coffee, tea, gourmet snacks and wine, according to the press release.
Despite the changes, Highland Books will continue to focus on books and serving the purpose of all indie bookstores - acting as a force for literacy advocacy and connecting people through words, books and ideas.
Highland Books plans to begin moving into the new space on March 1 and expects to be open shortly afterwards.
