The Reading Life with Sarah Broom

This week on The Reading Life: Susan talks with New Orleans native Sarah Broom about her critically acclaimed new book, "The Yellow House: A Memoir," a tale of what draws us home and what makes us leave, and a chronicle of a sprawling, complicated family and the house in New Orleans East that binds them all together in shared memory. And Susan has a few words about the passing of Toni Morrison.

Here in New Orleans:

  • There will be a celebration of the life of the late, great Toni Morrison with group reading, Sunday, August 25, at 5-7 p.m. at Southern Rep Theater, 2541 Bayou Rd. Then Antenna presents Playing in the Dark: Vigil for Toni Morrison, Wednesday, August 28, at 7 p.m. at the Antenna Gallery, 3718 St. Claude Ave. The event features a literary playlist curated by Kristina Kay Robinson.
  • Sarah Broom appears in conversation with Maurice Carlos Ruffin and signs “The Yellow House: A Memoir,” Wednesday, August 28, at 6 p.m. at Garden District Book Shop.
  • Zachary Lazar, author of "Vengeance," appears in conversation with photographer Deborah Luster for the Art of the City Book Club at the Historic New Orleans Collection, Wednesday, August 28, at 6 p.m. at 522 Royal St. Susan Larson moderates.
  • One Book One New Orleans, Engaging New Voices and Voters, and the New Orleans Public Library present a discussion, “Literacy as a Tool to Combat Incarceration,” Thursday, August 29, at 5:30 at the New Orleans Public Library Mail Library, 219 Loyola. The event begins with a reading by Zachary Lazar from “Vengeance,” the One Book One New Orleans selection, followed by a discussion with Bruce Reilly, Bobby Wallace, Patrick Young, and Jacqueline Hall Johnson.
  • Kate Lacour discusses and signs “Vivisectionary: A Convocation of Biological Art,” Thursday, August 29, at 6 p.m. at Blue Cypress Books.
  • Three authors discuss their Katrina books, Thursday, August 29, at 7 p.m. at the East Bank Regional Library in Metairie. They are John Batty, author of “Voices of Angels”; Laura Dragon, author of “Hurricane Boy”; and Mikel Schaeffer, author of Lost in Katrina.
  •  Timothy Faust appears in conversation with Nathan J. Robinson discussing his book, “Health Justice Now: Single Payer and What Comes Next,” Friday, August 30, at 6 p.m. at Garden District Book Shop.
  • The Fat Books Club takes on “The Arabian Nights,” starting September 1, with Susan Blalock leading the discussion in Abita Springs. If you’ve always wanted to read this classic with a group, email abitablalock@gmail.com.
  • The Dickens Society begins its reading of “The Old Curiosity Shop,” with a discussion of chapters 1-10, Saturday, September 14, at 2 p.m. at the Bright Library at Metairie Park Country Day School.

The Reading Life in 2010, Susan Larson was the book editor for The New Orleans Times-Picayune from 1988-2009. She has served on the boards of the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival and the New Orleans Public Library. She is the founder of the New Orleans chapter of the Women's National Book Association, which presents the annual Diana Pinckley Prizes for Crime Fiction.. In 2007, she received the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities lifetime achievement award for her contributions to the literary community. She is also the author of The Booklover's Guide to New Orleans. If you run into her in a local bookstore or library, she'll be happy to suggest something you should read. She thinks New Orleans is the best literary town in the world, and she reads about a book a day.
